Hadestown tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. During a famine, Orpheus meets the lovely Eurydice and asks her to marry him. He promises to make spring return with a song about Hades and Persephone. Upon hearing the music, Persephone arrives in the world and celebrates the summertime season. Soon enough, Eurydice falls in love with Orpheus. After Hades collects Persephone and brings her back to Hadestown, the cold season returns, prompting Orpheus to continue working on his song. Eurydice becomes desperate due to hunger and follows Hades to Hadestown, hoping to find safety and security. When Orpheus learns about Eurydice’s unfortunate fate, he sets out on a journey to look for Eurydice and save her.
Hadestown opened in Barre, Vermont, in 2006, followed by a brief tour that includes Vergennes and Massachusettes. Ten years later, a new version of the musical, directed by Rachel Chavkin, was launched on Off-Broadway. In 2018, Hadeston opened in London’s West End before returning to the states and opening on Broadway one year later. In 2021, Hadestown finally set out on a massive North American tour, extending until 2023. Hadestown, with its humble beginnings, became one of the most brilliant musicals in recent years. In 2019, the musical won nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and six Outer Critics Circle Awards. In 2020, Hadestown’s soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
“Watching ‘Hadestown’ unfold so gorgeously, I found myself thinking of other Greek characters: those lucky few saved from heartbreak by radical metamorphoses.” – Jesse Green from the New York Times.
“Its curious gift is that it only seems to get more relevant as time marches on. The [musical’s] national tour proves that we never should’ve doubted its staying power. If anything, it’s only grown more resonant in its time away.” – Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly.
