The Book Of Mormon

All the way from Broadway, it’s time for Texas to fall in love with theatre again as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be performing in Houston at Sarofim Hall on Sunday 12th January 2025.

The mindblowing and sometimes rude and crude musical Book of Mormon follows the story of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are tasked with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to preach to its residents. The Broadway show deliberately satirizes religion in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.

The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the animated TV show South Park and the musical Avenue Q.

Debuting in 2011, The Book of Mormon has undoubtedly been one of the most accomplished Broadway musicals since its creation. Conceptualized by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, the musical is based on the Latter-day Saints (LDS) founder and prophet Joseph Smith and his Book of Mormon. The show was originally meant to debut off Broadway at the NYC Theatre workshop after its 2008 staged reading, though this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as its actual premiere in 2011 moved to a more central location at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

In just a year, the play was already greenlit for a U.S. national tour that lasted four years, including a run in Salt Lake City, Utah! The show also carried on to be performed in several locations, with a Chicago production produced in 2012, a West End production in 2013, and Australian and European productions both performed in 2017.

The unconventionality and nonconformity of this musical were key components to this success. It shares the story of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, two Mormon missionaries who prepare to spread their religion in a remote village in Uganda. It is there that they struggle with completing their mission, as well as their different methods in teaching their religion, given that Cunningham chooses to teach the villagers by tacking on fictional parts from science fiction and fantasy stories into his sermons, while Price is determined to teach the villagers in the usual, orthodox manner. The way the Book of Mormon is shared with the audience is told in quite an unorthodox manner as well, usually satirizing religion in its script and also injecting humor in both of its acts, including its upbeat showtunes.

For its current run, the Book of Mormon will be in Houston in January at the magnificent theatre venue of Sarofim Hall, which holds an unforgettable stage, sound system and acoustics, and top facilities that is fit for this word-class show.
