The Book Of Mormon

Those looking for something fresh and modern in Texas now have another reason to be excited, as The Book of Mormon will be having a production in Houston, performing at Sarofim Hall on Saturday 11th January 2025. Witness top-level comedy from watching the production of the same creators of South Park and the musical Avenue Q.

The Book of Mormon is a musical about our views on religion, specifically of the mission of Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who through creative ways, attempt to convert villagers of a local village in Uganda. This Tony Award-winning Broadway play, that has proceeded to have successful productions in the U.S., London, and Australia, running for more than a decade to date, makes us laugh out loud but retains a meaningful narrative, with comedy through classical theatre and showtunes.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two coming of age Mormon missionaries tasked with a mission to a remote Ugandan village. Their mission is to convert the locals to their faith, but they find out upon their arrival that their job is more complex than they had assumed, given the pile of local issues that the villagers face such as a local warlord, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then come to accept that they must utilize more creative means to get through to the locals than the orthodox way that they know.

It is in this duo's difficult journey where the performance of The Book of Mormon shines – allowing the subject matter of religion to be blasphemed and injected with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of rude language, yet still remaining acceptable to the general public. Since its premiere in 2011, the The Book of Mormon has been received positively despite its manner of sharing its story. The church itself supported the musical, buying ads and releasing slogans specifically that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End productions, the repeatedly sold-out shows were a testament to The Book of Mormon’s success. Theatre goers were already expecting a shock given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their shock that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a a thought provoking tale that just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia met with a similar positive reception, with the Sydney Morning Herald even proclaiming that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that can lay fair claim to being the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”

What comes as no surprise however is that , The Book of Mormon’s several shows globally have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.

This upbeat, happy, and totally comedic musical continues its tour in Texas. Houston’s best theatre venue, Sarofim Hall, with its spacious seating capacity, magnificent lighting, and magical sound system will be hosting this January’s performance of The Book of Mormon.
