The longest-running Canadian musical in Broadway history, Come From Away, is coming to Houston, Texas, this spring! The true-to-life story that has been nominated seven times at the 71st Tony Awards will be taking over Sarofim Hall from March 22 to April 3, 2022. The award-winning musical, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is based on the events in Gander during and after the September 11 attacks in New York. While writing the show, Sankoff and Hein did extensive research to find the exact timeline of events. They even went as far as spending time and interviewing the townsfolk of Gander to create authenticity and build the foundation of the musical. Critics have described the show as “moving” and “uplifting.” Some even wrote that the musical would “make you feel good about humanity.” So, hurry up and get your tickets now to see this incredible music at the Sarofim Hall!
What happens when a small town suddenly receives 7,000 unexpected visitors? This happened to Gander, a small town in the northeast part of Newfoundland island in Canada. On the morning of the September 11 attacks, Canada offered to host inbound planes flying from Europe. Some planes were diverted to Gander International Airport, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When 38 planes unexpectedly landed at the airport, the 7,000 passengers initially were not allowed to deplane. Eventually, there were permitted to disembark the aircraft and take refuge in the town. Gander, which had 10,000 residents, suddenly doubled their population. As the “island people” opened up their homes to the “plane people,” some experience culture shock, while others’ tempers ran high. Come From Away is basically a touching story about everyone trying to make the best out of the situation.
