Set side by side with the former plot of the Shakespearean play which was presented live on stage approximately forty decades prior, critics have noted the many modifications which were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern show based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original narrative centers around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who journey to Paris and embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes ownership of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while adding new and equally powerful women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that encapsulate the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading characters throughout the production. Even the attire worn by the play’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new show and the previous classic by using Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
This January’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it opening in Texas, where Houston's Sarofim Hall is proud to be hosting this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Thursday 23rd January 2025.
