The Book Of Mormon

Coming to you from Broadway, it’s time for Texas to gear up and get ready as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be performing in Houston at Sarofim Hall on Friday 10th January 2025.

The mindblowing and sometimes humorously offensive musical Book of Mormon is focused on of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are tasked with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to share their faith with its residents. The play deliberately satirizes religion in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.

The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the cartoon TV show South Park and the musical Avenue Q.

Launching in 2011, The Book of Mormon has undoubtedly been one of the most accomplished Broadway musicals since its opening. Created by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, the musical was inspired by the Latter-day Saints (LDS) founder and prophet Joseph Smith complete with his Book of Mormon. The show was intended to debut off Broadway at the New York Theatre workshop after its 2008 staged reading, though this turned out to be just a prelude as its actual launch in 2011 moved to a more central location at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

After a year, the Book of Mormon was already given the go-ahead for a U.S. national tour that lasted four years, including a run in Salt Lake City, Utah, which marked the first time it would be performed there. The show also proceeded to be produced in several locations, with a Chicago production performed in 2012, a West End production in 2013, and Australian and Swedish productions both performed in 2017.

The storytelling and satire of this musical were key factors to this success. It tells the story of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, two LDS missionaries who embark on a mission to spread their religion in a remote village in Uganda. It is there that they contend with the local issues that the villagers face, as well as their different methods in preaching their faith, given that Cunningham lies to the villagers by tacking on hilarious tales woven from science fiction and fantasy stories into his religious teachings, while Price is resolved to teach the villagers in the usual, orthodox manner. The way the musical is shared with the audience is performed in quite an unorthodox manner as well, usually satirizing religion in its script and also injecting comic entertainment in both of its acts, and of course, let's not forget the showtunes!

For its current run, the Book of Mormon will be in Houston in January at the magnificent theatre venue of Sarofim Hall, which holds an impressive stage, sound system and acoustics, and unrivaled facilities that is fit for this box office hit.
